About the Course
In missing person cases, gathering and analyzing information is crucial. Traditionally, this process has been manual and time-consuming, relying on paper-based systems and human expertise to match search data with historical information. Our system, AI4SAR (Artificial Intelligence for Search and Rescue), modernizes this approach with a system that combines:
Electronic data collection: Replacing paper-based methods with desktop and mobile technology enabling real-time gathering of information.
Traditional data analysis: Using established statistical and data analysis methods to identify patterns and probabilities and compare these to historical data sets.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): Employing advanced techniques like machine learning and deep learning to:
Analyze complex terrain data
Predict likely locations of missing persons
Provide AI-driven insights to support decision-making
This combination of technologies allows for real-time analysis and more informed decision-making during search operations. AI4SAR is a collaboration between Cal Poly's Computer Science and Software Engineering Department and experienced search and rescue professionals. Our presentation will demonstrate the current AI4SAR system, showing how it collects and processes data, applies various analysis techniques, and uses AI to improve missing person search outcomes. AI4SAR builds upon the foundations of previous research, integrating multiple AI technologies with traditional methods for a comprehensive approach to land-based SAR operations.
